city, south connecticut, and south of boston going to get the biggest snow totals. let me show you what you can expect in the way of snow totals. the pink area is two to five inches, broad brush in pennsylvania. see that maroon spot south of boston, that's where we get the five to ten-inch area. near a foot south of boston locally. it's going to be an interesting one here at the airports. boston and new york included, in heavy delays today. and you have moderate delays back here. detroit, chicago, some cold and some wind going to affect them. los angeles will have rain. so, it doesn't just stop on the east coast. we have travel trouble in other places. but on the roads, anywhere in the pacific northwest could be a little slippery. and certainly, with this storm, again, from ohio all the way to maine. back to bianna. >> a travel nightmare for so many people. ginger, thank you. >>> we're going to turn to the desperate, last-ditch effort to try to keep the country from falling off the fiscal cliff, sending everybody's taxes up and possibly sending the country into another recession. i

new york city jfk airport threatening to go on strike on december 20th. these are the security guards. none at the checkpoint. but they direct traffic, make sure the gates are secure. it could add to the chaos of travelers will feel over a busy holiday. planes will be packed. the airline trade group says 85% to 90% of the seats will be filled. and the holiday trip will cost you more than last year, 9% more, according to travelocity. nonstop prices are nearly double than what they were at the beginning of december. >> the average price is over $400 round-trip. that's a big bite out of someone's wallet, especially if you multiply that across several family members. >> reporter: if you're still on the fence about whether to take that christmas flight, decide fast. >> the time to book was weeks ago. but if you haven't booked yet, you have to pull the trigger right now. prices are going up, not every day, but every hour you wait. >> reporter: looking for cheaper fares, travelocity says your best bet is christmas eve and christmas day. the most expensive days to fly are december 21st and 22

rain so far in the new york city area. another half-inch of rain coming. 45-mile-per-hour, 50-mile-per-hour winds. take a look at the damage that came in with the winds. four stories' worth of scaffolding collapsing. just one of the scaffolding collapses that we have seen in new york. "gma" storm site radar will show you there's plenty left in this storm, still plenty of rain from washington, d.c. to boston today. and plenty of snow in the back end behind it. we use this model to show us where the worst winds will be. what you need to look at is the red arrows. and those red arrows go from the boston area, north into maine, all the way to atlanta. this storm has big snowfall totals, big-time. 20 inches of snow coming down in some locations. and one of those places, williamsburg, iowa, picked up a good, heavy snowstorm and a blizzard. our ginger zee is right there. good morning, ginger. >> sam, we're tried desperately to get to chicago, just couldn't do it. i-80 kept shutting down. you can see why. this is what litters the side of the highway everywhere. trucks, semi-trucks. it was

a flake or two mixing in on the back side of those cities on the east coast. it's not going to be that big of a storm. the big one has already started and brought a lot of rain bringing accidents in san jose, california. they had almost a half inch, san francisco, almost an inch, not good on the roadways there and talk about bad roads, look at the next part here in the sierras. by the time this thing is done with them, five to even six feet of snow, so great for skiers, horrible as it's turned into a parking lot on some of their highways. that's is second storm. it has started. it'll cross over and here's where it gets interesting. earlier i said to dan and bianna, i said, geez, oh, pete. looking at some of the computer models. i got it a good old midwestern -- eastern oklahoma, some are over a foot of snow on christmas eve and christmas day. then you look into, and that's mostly christmas day, but watch this. as it moves, wednesday, ice up in the new england rain here and northeast. it finally exits thursday into friday. but that's when all the people are traveling. so we will ke

new york city subway system. >>> and the neighbor of the gunman who shot and killed two firefighters is now under arrest, accused of buying two of the guns in that deadly christmas eve ambush of firefighters in upstate new york. dawn young of rochester allegedly purchased the weapons in 2010 and gave them to william spengler, shown here, a convicted felon. spengler cannot legally buy guns for himself. police say spengler killed two volunteer firefighters in western new york and wounded two others after setting a fire to lure the firefighters into a trap. spengler then killed himself. >>> in california, a day of fishing turned deadly when two people were swept away by a large wave near the golden gate bridge. firefighters say, the two, described only as an adult and a juvenile were pulled into the ocean. they're bodies were found about 100 yards offshore. a third fisherman was also washed away. but he made it back to land and managed to wave for help. >>> and former president george h.w. bush is said to be improving. but he remains in intensive care in a hospital in houston. a family

chicago. the entire city is on-edge this morning, as authorities expand their manhunt. and we're learning more on just how those two escaped and where they went initially. abc's john schriffen has the latest. >> reporter: overnight, the manhunt for two escaped bank robbers intensified. but police chasing down multiple new leads. investigators say surveillance cameras captured joseph jose banks and kenneth conley, considered to be armed and dangerous, getting into a taxi, minutes after their brazen escape tuesday. and they showed up at conley's mother's home in a chicago suburb, just five hours later. conley's mother tells abc news, quote, he was in the house for two minutes. i can't tell you if he was armed. i made him get out. >> as hours go by, our chances get longer and longer. however, we do have several viable leads that we are running down. >> reporter: according to court documents, banks and conley were last seen locked up monday at 10:00 p.m. during headcount. it's then, authorities believe, the two stuffed their beds with clothes in the shape of bodies. broke the window,

to get back on its feet after it was walloped by the blizzard. this city, brought to a virtual standstill. the storm dumping more than seven inches of snow here. >> there we go. >> reporter: residents struggled to dig out. whiteout conditions across the lower midwest states. in southern illinois, a foot and a half of snow. in cleveland, ohio, freezing rain turned to snow. cancelling about 80% of flights in and out of cleveland. in arkansas, power lines snapped, leaving nearly 200,000 customers in the dark. and in the south, devastating tornadoes, causing panic as they touched down. this surveillance video taken at a walgreen's in mobile, alabama, shows a tornado ripping through the parking lot. inside, terrified customers scrambling for cover. from texas to alabama, at least 34 tornadoes rumbled across the area. this twister had winds of more than 110 miles per hour. flattening this church and anything unlucky enough to be in its path. until this morning, the storm is bearing down and creating havoc in the northeast. in new york city, wind gusts of nearly 50 miles per hour. ups
